Exotic is OK, but you rely on melee combat a lot more in that case. Energy is extremely counter-intuitive, it's probably the most glaring balance problem in the game. Heavy is nice too, but the most efficient weapon comes at least half way through the game. Standard weapons are the most effective. You can pick these up if you want to be economical. They're also dirt cheap to both buy and use. Psycho-Agility and Cryokinesis are more useful than pretty much all the other Psi powers combined.Spreading out your skills too much will make life hard, mostly because of inventory management problems. The survivalist sense of tension is a big part of why folks like this game. It is possible to play this game co-op, but I'd recommend playing it solo first. Save in the dedicated save slots as well, don't just rely on Quicksave - I think Autosave sometimes overwrites that. And on later levels, your spawn point in a new map is not guaranteed to be safe. The game won't autosave for you except when moving between levels. You can use the in-game map and set a navigation marker, but it's not as tutorial-mode as modern games. The game is old so it doesn't have map markers and objective compasses etc. Sometimes it's equally valid and less costly to just hide or sneak around and avoid the fights. Don't feel you have to pick every fight you see. Should be standard for survival shooters by now, but conserve your resources, especially early in the game. Same goes for the upgrade stations - you can only ever have 4 upgrades, and they are not created equal. There is flexibility but a certain type of build is definitely easier than others. These fields are not created equal, so don't expect an even playing field if you choose to specialize in one over the other. The game does allow you to advance your character's skills in several different fields (loosely defined as combat-Army, hacking-Navy, and psionics). It never took off, and you might need to tweak it to make it work with WASD. The default control scheme was Looking Glass' attempt at a panoramic control scheme.
